Most recently, we completed Filmmaking in France 2025 in Paris. With students from CSI, Brookly College, Hunter College, UC Irvine, and Swarthmore, several sharply conceived short films were made. Keeping ‘experiential Paris’ in mind, I added to the learning outcomes an emphasis on sound design. I wanted students to think carefully about the significance of sound in filmmaking, both during production and post-production. They took the task to heart. The results are exceptional as their experiments in visual observation combined with deep listening made for a more penetrative set of cinematic imaginings of the time and space they occupied while in Paris.
