Voices of Paris

American students attempt to understand the historical and cultural significance of French protest.

The film that brings home the tension in the air surrounding the murder of Nahel Merzouk, the young Muslim man who died at the hands of the police just prior to our arrival, is Les Voix de Paris (Voices of Paris). Produced by Julian Engle and directed by Anthony Flores, the documentary hits the streets to listen to Parisians and other nationals as they express their views on the police action; perhaps, more significantly, the film documents the complex views that come to define nationalism. With le quatorze juillet (Bastille Day, July 14, 2023) as their background, the filmmakers literally immersed themselves in the thick of the political urgencies marking our stay in Paris. The dynamic collaboration in making the film included the talents of Collin Cord, Omar Garcia, Justice Pinzon, Brendan “Beazt” Hall, and Samantha Goslin.
